I believe, based on hours of online research, that ibik's Aster is the front runner in this category by a huge margin. There have been some other similar solutions such as (at the time of this post):

  • Thinsoft's BeTwin - hasn't been updated since Windows 7!

  • MiniFrame's SoftXpand - went out of business some time ago.

  • FriendlySeats - has not been updated since Windows XP!

  • Useful's Simple Desktop Virtualization - This product is no longer listed on their website.

    • VMware Workstation Pro and Unraid are two other products that pop up. Both are good but I don't feel that they should be directly compared to Aster because:
  • Separate versions of Windows must be licensed and installed

  • CPU, memory, and hard drive resources must be allocated rather than just shared

  • Not stand alone applications

  • Much more complex

  • Much harder to install, setup, and maintain

  • Don't dynamically share resources

  • Run desktops in isolation

  • Primary goal of these solutions is not multiseat

    • In some instances the above may be viewed as a positive, but if you are looking for something simple and straight forward then some of the above may be negatives.
